Our Origins Story

I was born in the United States, but some of my earliest, sharpest memories are from visiting family in India. While the adults talked, I watched the dogs — the street dogs and the wild ones, living rough at the edges of everything. I was too young to do anything about it, but I wasn't too young to feel it. Somewhere on one of those trips I made myself a quiet promise: when I grew up, I'd adopt an Indian dog of my own.

Years later, I did. And the dog I brought home turned out to be everything those street dogs were — resourceful, wary, brilliant, and absolutely impossible to contain. He was a Houdini. On walk after walk he'd twist, back up, drop a shoulder, and slip clean out of every harness I bought him. Each escape was a heart-in-throat moment: a rescue dog who didn't fully trust the world yet, loose near traffic, looking back at me like I'd already lost him.

I tried everything on the market. Nothing held. The harnesses that were escape-proof were brutal and punishing; the ones that were humane came right off. No one had solved both at once.

So we built it. DUO Technical Gear was founded by Raj and Gio — two California natives, designers, and inventors who grew up surfing, snowboarding, climbing, hunting, racing, and chasing everything this state's weather makes possible. We noticed the only times we weren't behind a screen were the times we were out with our dogs. They forced us to put the phone down and get back into the world.

Humans and dogs have evolved together for thousands of years as an inseparable duo. They've been beside us since the beginning, and as we change, they follow us on the journey. DUO is our homage to that bond.
