Dog Harnesses for Large Dogs
Most harnesses sold as "large" are a medium with a longer strap. The hardware does not change, the stitching does not change, and the failure point is the same one it always was — a plastic buckle or a single-stitch ring holding back a hundred and fifty pounds of dog that has decided to go the other way.
DUO builds for big dogs specifically. The PRO line is cut and sewn by hand in Southern California in sizes M through XXL, with steel and zinc alloy hardware rated up to 2000 pounds, milspec webbing, ballistic nylon, and load-bearing joints bar-tacked with T70 thread. Every PRO harness has a lifting handle.
The patented cinch system contracts under leash tension — grabbing your dog's body when they try to escape or go reactive, and turning your dog around when they pull. It also prevents the harness from rotating around or pulling off your dog's body.
If you are here after a harness broke, or after your dog backed out of one that was fitted correctly, that is the failure this was designed around.
Sizing for large and giant breeds
What size do I need for a 150 lb dog?
A PRO in XXL. Measure the base of the neck and the chest behind the front legs and send us both numbers — we will give you one answer, not a range.
What is the difference between XL and XXL?
Chest circumference, primarily. Both are made to order. Send us your measurements rather than ordering by breed — two Great Danes can be two sizes apart.
My dog is deep-chested. Will it fit?
Yes. Our harnesses are designed for larger breed dogs, including deep-chested and barrel-chested builds. The chest and neck adjust independently, which is what most harnesses get wrong on these dogs.
Do you make anything for dogs over 200 lbs?
Email us. PRO is made to order, so custom builds are quoted individually.
Handle, warranty, and support
Do your harnesses have a handle?
Yes. Every PRO harness has a load-bearing handle over the shoulders, useful for control at the curb, helping an older dog into a vehicle, or holding position in a crowd.
What if it fails?
Lifetime warranty on materials and craftsmanship, with free repairs. We have been doing this for seven years and we answer our own email.
Let customers speak for us
from 89 reviewsWe recently started using the Duo Direct harness with our rescue puppy, Sunny, and we’re already really impressed with the quality. The materials feel durable without being bulky, and it’s easy to put on and adjust.
Sunny is still learning that the world isn’t so scary, so having a harness that gives us better control while keeping him comfortable has been really helpful during training and walks. We especially appreciate how secure it feels without restricting his movement.
You can tell a lot of thought went into the design. It’s comfortable, well-made, and has given us more confidence as we continue working with Sunny on his leash skills. We’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quality training harness.
We purchased 2 of these and love the quality. We did a quick trial walk and it seemed like it will do what it's supposed to to help with extreme pulling. I will update my review & include pics/video when we've had a chance to do a full walk with both of our maniac dogs.
I LOVE this harness! My dog pulled me over twice last week before we got this. Splat on sidewalk! I've tried the nose loop thing and the big spike collar but he just pulls through those. He's mostly real good on a leash but he sees a bunny and off he goes! First time he chased a bunny with this harness his butt swung around and he ended up facing me!! WIN!
Amazing harness for giant breed dogs!
Great setup for our Kangal !
Highly recommended customized as requested . Thanks Raj
Such an awesome job creating our pink harness for GiGi…We love it and she loves it. Thank you to Raj and Team!
We have a very large very strong 2.5 year old male Anatolian Shepherd. He weighs in at 150+ lbs. with a 26" neck and a 40" chest and is pure muscle. He lives in the house most of the time, but also spends time with us at our barn which is fenced in. We built a very strong industrial like trolley system to get him from the house to the barn and vice versa. There are tie outs on both ends to get him to and from safely in and out of the door or the gate to the trolley line. Our problem is he is EXTREMELY reactive and will "take off" at the sight of a person, squirrel, bird, rabbit or the neighbors unleashed dogs. If it is in his sight, it belongs to him. The power behind him is incredible. It isn't a training issue, it is an instinctual issue. We bought what we thought was a "heavy duty", "strong enough for him" harness for the system. He took off after a squirrel we didn't see, hit the end of the line (it is cushioned and he wears a heavy duty bungee) and the harness he was wearing blew apart. Now he's loose! He didn't continue after the squirrel and we are lucky he didn't realize he was loose or other dogs ran out. I was able to calmly grab his collar and get him inside. Very shaken to say the least, we immediately jumped online to search for "something" that will hold him if and when that happens again. My husband landed on the Duo-Gear website and actually was able to chat with a live person on the weekend! That person happened to be Raj, the owner of Duo-Gear. I jumped in and explained our situation and what we needed. He offered to customize the Duo "Eclipse" harness for our Auggie. He added extremely strong Cobra clips and heavy duty rings as well as extra box stitching. He described it as "bullet proof". It is important that the rings are structural, not just sewed in to handle this kind of power. Raj said that he would get us pricing within a few days, which he did. He also said it would be ready in about 2 weeks, which it was. We kept in contact from start to finish and then again to share a success story. Auggie bolted on Sunday morning after another squirrel. This time in his new custom made Duo Eclipse harness. Every piece of equipment did it's job as it was supposed to. We inspected the harness very closely and don't see anything out of place. We are so grateful to know that he is safely contained now. Thank you to Raj and everyone involved on the Duo side for your understanding, attention to detail and above and beyond excellent customer service. (sorry that was so long!)
I have been through 2 harnesses already. This harness isthe best. Sturdy easy to put on and as a bonus I am in love with the hardware. So upscale my dog is the most stylish
Walking my 86 pound lab has been a tug of war challenge for the last two years. The Duo harness actually makes the walk enjoyable, works as advertised. No pulling without choking the dog. Harness is well made and easy to adjust . Customer service was very good when I had questions on adjusting harness for optimum control. After trying over 10 different harnesses over the last two years , this is the one !
I like the steel buckle, no worries about breakage. Great quality over all and the shipping was very fast. We are return customers as we have purchased two harnesses as well. Thank You Duo!
We are a giant breed rescue family. We have a rescue Cane Corso coming our way for a test stay. We are buying our third of your no-pull harness.
We have two giant breed dogs in them now.
Your harnesses have been a godsend with our giant breed rescues. They make a 180 pound dog, known to haul 2,000 pound carts, easily managed by my 120 pound Wife.
Thank you for an outstanding harness!
Very sturdy, superior quality leash that works well with all harnesses. Strong enough to control my 150 lb dog. It will last a lifetime I think. Many leashes seem fine in the beginning, but turn out flimsy within weeks, or turn out slippery and slimy when wet. This is not the case with the DUO leash. I ordered from Europe after having a great experience with DUO harnesses.
I purchased the ”Adapt” model in addition to my previous purchase of ”Direct” no-pull model for my 150 lb Newfie. The ”Direct” had immediately changed my newfie’s behavior from a timid city-walker and sometime lunger to a confident companion. So now I can use the ”Adapt” model in less populated settings. It also gives me a lot of control and confidence as a walker, and more confidence for my dog. For city walks I always go back to the ”Direct” no-pull model. The ”Adapt” is super high quality, unique harness, very sturdy, fantastic design, and it has changed mine and my newfie’s lives for the better. I ordered from Europe and it was well worth it.
I can’t say enough great things about the DUO 'DIRECT' No Pull Dog Harness! It’s thoughtfully designed with both comfort and durability in mind. The material is sturdy yet soft so that it doesn’t rub or irritate my dog’s skin. I use it for both long walks and hikes. The fit is fantastic and my dog feels very secure in it without being restrictive. Additionally the clips are very sleek looking. It’s clear that this harness was created my people who truly understand real-world dog owners!
I purchased the Duo Direct No-Pull harness and I could not be more pleased. We have a reactive dog (Aspen) and have been through pinch collars, e-collars, and so on. There is no perfect fix BUT out of all the products that we have used the Duo Direct harness has been hands down our best choice. It gives our dog a much more comfortable experience and allows us the ability to easily control Aspen's reactiveness. My only regret is that I did not find this harness before now. A big thank you to Duo Dog Gear and their team.
