Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know — from how it works to getting the right fit.

How it works
Most front-clip harnesses just turn your dog sideways when they pull — they redirect but don't deter. DUO's patented cinch is different: when your dog pulls or tries to escape, the harness contracts around their body, creating pressure feedback from their own tension. No other harness on the market can legally replicate this mechanism.
When your dog reacts at the end of the leash, the cinch activates and creates a gentle squeeze around their body. It engages closer to the neck but won't choke them or place any stress on the delicate throat anatomy — the pressure is distributed across the body, not the neck. When your dog shakes off or relaxes and starts walking again, the harness will slowly loosen up. You can also release it manually if needed.
Yes. DUO was specifically designed as a force-free alternative to prong collars and e-collars. It gives handlers real control without aversive tools.
The DIRECT is built for dogs that pull hard on leash — it's the no-pull harness. The ADAPT is built for dogs that back out or escape — it's the no-escape harness. Both use the same patented cinch mechanism, just optimized for different problems. If your dog does both, ask us which problem is more dangerous right now.
The ECLIPSE is DUO's adventure and all-purpose harness — built for hiking, car travel, and giant breeds that need full body coverage. It's also a good fit for owners of elderly or special needs dogs who need a direct physical connection and grab handle.
Because it works differently. Under leash tension, most harnesses twist, slide, and sometimes pull clean off your dog's back — they're passive by design. DUO is active: the harness grabs your dog's body under tension, becoming more snug the harder they pull or try to escape, without any adverse effect on their neck or throat. That's the mechanism competitors can't legally copy — it's patented.
Choosing the right harness
The DUO DIRECT. It's built specifically for heavy pullers and reactive dogs.
The DUO ADAPT. The cinch tightens when your dog tries to back out, making escape virtually impossible.
Ask yourself: which one is more dangerous right now — the pulling or the escaping? Your answer points to the DIRECT or the ADAPT. If you're genuinely unsure, contact us and we'll help you decide.
Yes — the DIRECT is a good fit for this exact situation. The harness gives you mechanical advantage you simply don't have with a standard front-clip. A lot of DUO customers are petite owners with powerful dogs who needed to feel safe on walks again.
Yes. For dogs with vision loss, age-related needs, or rescue trauma, we'd point you toward the ECLIPSE or ADAPT. The grab handle gives you a direct physical connection to your dog at all times, and the secure body fit means they always know where you are. We'd frame this less around control and more around guidance and trust.
The patented mechanism is identical in both — the cinch that stops pulling and prevents escape works exactly the same way. What you're paying up for with PRO is the hardware and the guarantee: MILSPEC materials, metal buckles rated to 500 lbs, made in Southern California, and a lifetime guarantee. ESSENTIALS is the same technology at an accessible price point with a 30-day warranty.
For most dogs, ESSENTIALS is the right starting point — same mechanism, lower barrier to entry. If your dog has extreme strength, severe reactivity, or has already destroyed other harnesses, the PRO is worth the investment from day one.
Sizing
Two measurements: base of neck (circumference where the neck meets the chest) and torso (circumference around the largest section of the body, usually just behind the armpits). Use both together with your dog's weight to find the right size. Full sizing guide →
Size Neck Torso Weight
XS9"–12"15"–19"8–18 lbs
SM13"–17"20"–25"19–35 lbs
M18"–21"26"–28"36–54 lbs
L22"–25"29"–32"55–89 lbs
XL25"–27"33"–35"90–115 lbs
XXL26"+36"+116+ lbs
Use all three measurements — neck, torso, and weight — and go with whichever size two of the three point to. Weight is the tiebreaker if you're still unsure. The webbing has significant adjustment range above and below the listed measurements, so borderline dogs almost always fit comfortably in one size.
Size for where they'll be in three months, not where they are now. The harness adjusts down to fit them currently and can be let out as they grow.
Yes. DUO was built with giant breeds in mind — Newfoundlands, Cane Corsos, Great Danes, Mastiffs. The XXL fits dogs 116 lbs and up, with neck measurements 26"+ and torso 36"+. For dogs over 200 lbs, the XXL Eclipse is the right fit.
Before you buy
The way the DIRECT works, the harness body stays snug to your dog under leash tension — it won't twist off their body or pull away like a standard harness. The leash attachment ring can be positioned to sit right at the chest for maximum control, or adjusted to wrap slightly further around the body to remove even more pulling leverage. Either way, it stays where you put it.
It looks more complicated than it is. Once you see it in motion, the mechanism is straightforward: dog pulls or backs out, harness cinches. That's it. Watch the fit guide video for your harness before your first use — most people say "oh, that's it?" the moment they see it move. See the fit guides →
You have 7 days to try it. If it's not right, return it in new condition and we'll take care of you. You'll know within the first walk or two whether it's working.
It needs to come back in new condition. Wipe down any scuffs or dirt with a damp cloth and warm water — no soap. For dog hair, use a lint roller or a piece of packing tape to lift it off the webbing.
Yes. That's exactly what the 7-day window is for. Try it on, take them for a walk or two, and if the size isn't right, return it in new condition.
Check the site for current promotions. We keep discounts limited to protect the value of both lines — but when they're running, they're worth it.
Care & maintenance
Wipe down scuffs and dirt with a damp cloth and warm water. No soap needed — the materials are built for hard use and clean up easily with just water.
A lint roller or a piece of packing tape lifts it right off. Handy to keep near the door for before and after walks.
Do not machine wash or tumble dry. Hand wash only with clean water and air dry indoors. Do not leave in direct sunlight — UV exposure will degrade the plastic buckles over time.
